The richly illustrated scholarly monograph follows van Gogh from early gloomy paintings depicting the misery of workers and peasants in his homeland, through the Paris period filled with bright colors, to his last years spent under the hot southern sun in Arles. It was here that he finally discovered the light that is the main feature of the inimitable van Gogh style. In a feverish explosion of creative energy that marked the last two and a half years of his life in Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise, he created 465 paintings on which his immortality rested.
